Students have the chance to immerse themselves in the visual arts as well. We explore mediums of drawing, painting, copper tooling, sculpture, and much more! CCHS offers intro, intermediate, and advanced art classes. In the past, students in the advanced art classes were able to design and create their own projects that included a mosaic table top, ceramic pieces, and a large-scale charcoal drawing.
Every year, students have the option of competing in the education division of the state fair. In 2009, over 10 prizes were awarded to CCHS students, including a grand prize award for a photograph taken by Hannah DeVries.
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1
God is the source of all creativity. He created the world and everything in it, but he created humans uniquely, in His image. The ability to create and to look at creation from an artist’s eye are gifts from God, and by using God’s gifts, we praise Him.
In the art classroom at Calvin Christian, we use and develop our special gift of creativity through production, evaluation and enjoyment of visual arts. CCS follows a Discipline Based Art Education (DBAE) curriculum. Under this program, students will gain knowledge about the history of art. They will learn to appreciate art’s beauty, and they will develop the ability to critique and talk about art. However, at the center of every lesson is art production or the creation of art. God calls us to create, notice and find meaning from natural and human creations.
