Nearly 400 members of the Calvin Christian School community attended the "Servants of the King" Auction & Dinner on Saturday, May 9, 2009, at the Golden Valley Country Club.
Michael Pearce Donley of Triple Espresso provided the evening's musical entertainment, moving seamlessly from hilarious comedy numbers to more serious songs, including one that highlighted the event's "servant" theme. Other highlights included a moving tribute to long-time teacher Marilyn Hielkema and recognition of Superintendent Steve Groen for his 20 years of service to Calvin Christian.
The evening began with a silent auction featuring nearly 200 items, from oil changes to exotic vacations. Later in the evening several higher-ticket items were sold in a live auction. Auction proceeds totaled more than $48,000.
At the end of the evening, attendees responded generously to the invitation to "claim-a-match" by making a donation to support the operations of Calvin's K-8 or high school campuses. Along with the matches from challenge funds provided by a small group of CCS supporters, nearly $50,000 was given to help fund the school's day-to-day work of equipping students to be servants of the King.
