Buffalo River, Arkansas
While juniors and seniors enjoy Washington D.C., CCHS freshman and sophomores immerse themselves, sometimes literally, in the created wonders of North Central Arkansas. Students and staff spend three days paddling the deep pools and surprising rapids of the Buffalo River Valley.
When rough water isn’t demanding the attention of canoeist, massive limestone bluffs, soaring vultures, and basking turtles provide many opportunities to say, “My God, how great Thou art!”
On the third day in the greening river canyon, students are asked to spend time reflecting on the wonders they have experienced. Last trip on student wrote, “I sometimes just let my finger trail in the cool clear water when the current was slowly drifting by. I have always loved the hymn, “When Peace like a River,” and now I can understand it more.”
Not all the river is so peaceful, however; in the past rapids have washed over the front of the boats and a handful of boats deposited riders and gear into the cool waters. Thankfully most gear and all the riders were recovered, although some pride may have been lost for good.
