Rigorous Academics Aimed at the Heart
Calvin Christian strives to make the entire educational experience distinctively Christian. We recognize that discipleship encompasses every area of life, so we seek to know Gods will and serve him as we teach and learn math or social studies, no less than when we study the Scriptures or encourage loving interaction on the playground.
That approach leads to an education that is both focused and broad. The curriculum is characterized by high academic standards with emphasis on the mastery of reading, writing, and mathematics. But breadth and integration of knowledge are also stressed, so interdisciplinary study, extracurricular activities, and instruction in art, music, and physical education are included in the educational program.
Equipping for discipleship also means helping each student recognize and develop his or her individual gifts and talents. CCS teachers strive to understand the learning styles and needs of their students, then provide a variety of effective educational strategies. Beyond the classroom, the challenge program enriches the educational experience for CCS students, while the learning resource program helps meet the needs of students who have difficulty learning.
Recognized quality
Academic excellence is a natural outcome of Calvin's vision for Christian education. Equipping for discipleship means ensuring that our students' training is second to none.
Calvin graduates and parents attest to the quality education that CCS provides. Our graduates have gone on to success at high schools large and small, Christian and secular, throughout the Twin Cities. In a recent parent survey, 98 percent of respondents agreed with the statement, "The education program offered at Calvin Christian is of high quality." The same percentage said they recommend CCS to others.
Calvin students in grades three through seven take the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) annually, and eighth graders take the Minnesota Basic Skills Test (MBST) in reading and math. Class averages for Calvin on the ITBS show our students achieving well above average when compared to peer groups nationwide. On the MBST, taken annually by eighth graders across the state, Calvin Christian has consistently been among the top schools in the metro area, both in percentage of students passing and average score earned. (A comprehensive explanation of the Basic Skills Tests along with a database of scores for all schools and districts can be found at the website of the Department of Children, Families and Learning.)
